Imagine Festival Artist Spotlight: Black Tiger Sex Machine

Focusing solely on Black Tiger Sex Machine (BTSM), this spotlight aims to give you a broader knowledge of who they are and why you should check them out – before, during, and after Imagine!

Born from a collision between many alternate histories and our own, BTSM brings us an experience designed to prepare our bodies and minds for the choices we as a species will have to make in our quest for a utopian future. The time traveling, future saving, cyber tiger-headed members of BTSM are Marc Chagnon, Julien Maranda and Patrick Barry. Through their art, they share glimpses into realities both similar and alien from our own. Their music invites you to envision the possible paths our future as a species could take, and the environment that each of those paths would create.

Recently, BTSM released their first full length album “Welcome To Our Church”, whose story is quoted as follows:welcome to our church

“The world was a wondrous place. Technology had unlocked the skies; beings from far off planets had become new friends. The dream of utopia beckoned as humanity lifted itself towards transcendence.

Till one day, from within, they appeared. Ravenous, disfigured monsters, mad with an unquenchable lust for flesh, rampaging through villages and cities, consuming and infecting all they met with an incurable plague: the Kannibalen virus. As this tide of death spread uncontrollably, the rich fled to the stars and the visitors quarantined the planet, leaving the rest to fend for themselves. Some hid in far off wastelands, others locked themselves in walled cities, salvaging what they could to preserve what was left of civilization. Amidst the chaos, some sought profit and power: opportunists, war mongers, pirates twisted by evil; whispers spread of half-breeds and mutants twisting their strings from the shadows. But hope still lived. Bands of survivors, fighting to preserve humanity and restore the world to what it was.

This is the story of one of these groups.

Welcome To Our Church!”

Having battled Scorpion from the Mortal Kombat Universe, entranced rave vampires, and successfully escaped an Orwellian Big Brother timeline, the planeswalkers are internationally beloved for their live performances. When not traveling across universal thresholds, BTSM put out music videos that pay tribute to a vast number of artists from across the spectrum who influenced them. The philosophy of their music is best captured in a portion of the description of their track “Moonlight”, which reads: “‘Moonlight’ is an auditory and visual metaphor for the duality present within BTSM’s music, the juxtaposition of rage and beauty, of perversion and purity.” For a taste of just what that means – especially if you’re a fan of “A Clockwork Orange”- check out the song to it’s Official Music Video:

If none of this has convinced you to follow them on SoundCloud and add them to your music library, then check them out live at Imagine Festival (or at any of their other upcoming tour dates), where they just might make you a believer.
